Beginning of the New Year 2025

It's been several months since I last updated my articles, and some things have happened recently.

PhD Application and Graduation#

Since December of last year, I decided to stay for further studies, and many things have happened since then.

First, I happily accepted the offer from my boss; then in March, I was educated by my boss due to flaws in my application materials (I am very grateful, it was indeed my issue); then at the end of March, I received news that my boss would be leaving; soon after, a plan emerged for transferring groups after admission; my emotions have been on a roller coaster for just over a month. Fortunately, I received help from another teacher for my PhD application, and I have now obtained an offer, but which group I will transfer to is still undecided, waiting for the results.

However, graduation will depend on myself. I recently finished revising the blind review comments, and I don't know who to ask for help to review them, hoping everything goes smoothly.

Content#

I recently reopened my senior's Structural Biology Learning Website, and I must say it has become much richer in content since the last time I visited. However, the small errors I found last time are still there, so I pointed them out to my senior and received affirmation.

Thinking back to my PhD application, I initially hoped to include my personal website in my resume and slides, but my senior said the content of the website is too broad and not focused on the academic field, suggesting I remove it, which I found reasonable.

So I considered whether I need to create a website specifically focused on academic content. After some thought, I decided against it and will include it in my personal website instead; otherwise, the content of my personal website would be too sparse. After all, as a biology student, I can't have a personal website solely filled with unrelated content. However, I plan to make some changes:

  • Reclassify manuscripts and notes: The manuscripts will only include content related to my work and academics, categorized clearly, whether it's Cryo-EM, X-Ray, or other research-related topics, making it easier to find. Other content like reflections and travel notes will be placed in the notes section.
  • Place some tutorials that I don't want to make public in the Internal Tutorials section of the manuscripts: In the past, there were some tutorials that I felt were not suitable for public sharing, so I kept them locally. Using the password required feature in the notes can achieve this goal.
  • Quality of content: This is also inspired by my senior's content; many pieces are not written in detail because they take a lot of time to write, which needs to change. Future content creation will focus on quality.

Printing Photos#

During the New Year, I brought my camera and photo printer home, took pictures of my family, and printed them out. Unfortunately, I forgot to organize a family photo this year; I must make up for it next year if I have the chance.

I found this process very ceremonial and meaningful, so I recently bought a bunch of photo paper and printed out photos from the past 2-3 years, planning to make an album.

The photo printer I used is a birthday gift from my girlfriend last year, the Xiaomi MiJia Photo Printer 1S, which can print 3-inch and 6-inch photo paper:

  • The 3-inch photo paper is square, which leads to a significant difference in photo proportions and sizes compared to regular 3-inch prints, making it difficult to master.

  • The 6-inch photo paper size is what I prefer, with a ratio of about 3:2.

    • Landscape photos can be printed directly in 6 inches;
    • If 6 inches feels too large, you can use Meitu Xiuxiu to combine two images, selecting a ratio of 3:2 with a 60-pixel gap, and then add a border when printing, which will perfectly print two 4-inch photos.
    • Additionally, you can print in a style like a life 4-frame, referring to this note

In short, there are many ways to play around with it. If you are interested, I can write a tutorial to teach you how to print.

Daily Life#

After returning to school from home, I found that the first Type-C port on my MacBook has a poor connection. There are only 2 Type-C ports, and now only one is usable.

I checked online, and it might be due to oxidation of the small board in the Type-C port, which can be bought for just a few bucks on Taobao; I found a Shanghai vendor who can replace it for 100 yuan. However, it could also be a motherboard issue, which would be more troublesome.

But I haven't replaced it yet, as it doesn't currently affect usage; my usual needs are just connecting to a monitor and charging.
